It Was The French Impressionists Who First lit the fire for me
Laurie VanBalen
I may have come into this life with a pencil in my hand. I can't recall a time when I wasn't making pictures.
It was the French Impressionists who first lit the fire for me, triggering the adrenaline that made me want to paint. Working mainly with oils and pastels, I aim to capture the essence of a subject with the desire to render the narratives within.
I live in an 1870's Ohio home that houses both my husband's music studio and my art studio. This is where most of my artwork has originated during a thirty-five-year career that includes exhibitions, commissions, book illustration and design. During that time I have also enjoyed the privilege of providing art programs to students of all ages, sharing in the joy and the freedom of the creative process.
